We respond to all inquiries within one business day. For urgent research questions, please indicate that in your message.
No. We are an independent research guide and do not sell or administer DNA tests. We provide guidance on selecting, submitting, and interpreting tests from commercial providers. We have no commercial relationship with any testing company.
Yes. Our team has experience with US, European, Latin American, and other genealogical records. We are particularly experienced in US records, immigration history, African American genealogy, and DNA-based research methods.
Any names, dates, and places you already know for your ancestors; any DNA test results you have already taken; and a description of where your current research has reached an obstacle. The more context you provide, the more helpful our initial response can be.
To help us respond usefully, please describe the question you are working on, the names and approximate dates of the ancestors involved, the places where they lived, and which testing services or record collections you have already used. Short summaries are perfectly fine; we simply want to understand where you are in your research so that our reply points you toward resources that genuinely fit your situation.
Please do not send raw DNA files, Social Security numbers, or financial information through the contact form. We never ask for such data, and our educational replies do not require it. Messages are answered in the order they arrive, usually within two business days, and we do not share your contact details with testing companies or advertisers.
Remember that DNA results and documentary records work best together. A genetic match can suggest a relationship, but census entries, vital records, church registers, land deeds, and newspaper notices are what allow you to place that relationship accurately in time and place. When the two kinds of evidence agree, your conclusions become far stronger and far easier for other researchers to verify.
Privacy deserves attention at every step. Before uploading raw DNA data to any third-party service, read its terms of service and privacy policy carefully, check whether law enforcement matching is enabled by default, and decide how much of your family information you want to make visible to other users. Living relatives should always be asked before their names, dates, or photographs are published in a public online tree.
